Trucksmarter

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Trucksmarter back in 2021. They're currently building a suite of tools that help to empower truck drivers, from owner operators to fleet managers. On the whole, the industry is pretty tough on drivers. From finding competitive rates for lanes, all the way through to getting paid on time, Trucksmarter aims to make the lives of the millions of truckers in America easier.

One of the overarching goals of the collaboration was to help inject brand personality and drive more simplicity into the app. The changes above seem pretty obvious, but we went through a number of revisions to test out different layouts and compositions that supported the right level of information at the right time. The previous design left filtering and searching as separate entry points, and users of the app weren't too sure where to go for what. So we knew we had to join the functions together somehow.

One of the ideas we were exploring was how to combine both filtering and searching into one framework. Ultimately we moved in favor of incorporating the filters into the initial search view.

The search and filter view that we evolved towards can be seen above, where we combined both functions into a one stop shop for finding different loads and lanes. We incorporated a result count into the primary button, which avoided a frustration we'd heard echoed by users that their searches were showing a small amount of results. The recent searches section up top allows users to quickly switch back and forth between different searches that they may be comparing.

A big part of the process is bidding on the loads and reviewing those bids. We came up with a messaging framework that could provide users the right level of feedback at the right time across different phases of the load procurement process.

Onboarding was another aspect that I helped out with. At one moment in time we were interested in understanding more about our user types, and took onboarding as an opportunity to do so while also helping to set up their trailer types and pre-populate their search filters. I tried to inject some personality here with illustrations to help support the flow, with the aim of adding some craft and character in the process. There are a number of different load boards out there in the app store, which makes it super important to develop a distinct brand and character to stand out. Onboarding was seen to be a key moment in this strategy.
